Vassilis Kouroutos
Vassilis, holds a University degree in Biology/ Environmental studies. He brings more than 25 years of environmental management experience, including extensive knowledge in natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, sustainable development and ecotourism & field research projects. His background has ranged across educational delivery and planning, business development & management, biodiversity conservation strategies, protected area management, planning of research and education activities, as well as community and private sector engagement. In the NGO/ public sector he has worked as Director of Mom (The Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal) and MEDASSET (Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles), Manager of the National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades, Senior Scientific Officer of the National Park of Zakynthos and Manager/ Senior Scientific Officer of the Protected Area of Lake Pamvotis. As manager of his own ecotourism business he has gained extensive experience in sustainable tourism development and business administration. During his professional life as a Biology scientist, conservationist and environmental manager has coordinated various multimillion EU/international programmes, has conducted numerous biodiversity monitoring surveys, worked with conservation groups, local communities, decision-making bodies and intergovernmental agencies, supervised many volunteer/ student groups, lectured in postgraduate (University of Thessaly) and field training courses, wrote funding proposals and functioned as evaluator/ rapporteur of project proposals submitted to the European Commission Research Executive Agency - REA. He has participated in many environmental documentaries and has written numerous wildlife and conservation articles. He is co-author of the Resource Book for Educators in South-Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean "Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Biospheres Reserves and other Designated Areas", a joint UNESCO and MIO-ECSDE publication. He is an experienced qualified ship captain (Skipper Class A diploma) and he holds lifesaving and fire fighting certificate and a sailing boat offshore yacht master diploma. He is an experienced SCUBA diver with more than fifteen (15) years sailing experience in cruise boats, as well as in private, research, sailing and law enforcement patrol vessels.

The project was sponsored by RAC/SPA (UNEP/MAP), UNDP/GEF/SGP, MEDASSET, “Vernicos Yachting SA”, and was supported by the Albanian Ministry of Environment and Tirana University (October - November 2005).
- Co-managed the organisation’s conservation monitoring fieldwork and public awareness projects in Lebanon. The project was financially supported by RAC/SPA (UNEP/MAP), MEDASSET, the MedWetCoast Project (managed by the Lebanese Ministry of Environment) and a grant from the British Chelonia Group (BCG), (Summer 2005).
- Co-ordinated the campaign for the protection of sea turtles and their nesting beaches in Zakynthos National Marine Park, Greece.
- Co-ordinated the adaptation and translation into Arabic of an Environmental Education Kit for 6-12 year-old children, “The Mediterranean Sea: A Source of Life”.
