Acherontas and Kalamas
Located in Northern Greece, in the Epirus region, the outfalls of the rivers Acherontas and Kalamas into the Ionian Sea together with the marsh of Kalodikiou form the National Park of Kalama-Acherontas Rivers.
It is an area with unique aesthetic and ecological value, as well as historical as according to Greek mythology, Acherontas was the river where Haros (Charon or “Death”) was transferring (by boat) the deceased to the gates of Hades (Adis - underworld).
The beautiful canyon that crosses the river Acheron with the steep slopes and dark green clear water is an area of exceptional biogeographical interest which contains remarkable habitats that host many rare or endangered species of fauna and flora. It is also an area with unique natural features, such as marshes, coves with dunes, magnificent coastal ecosystems with steep cliffs covered with pine forests, which provide to the area a distinct biological landscape and aesthetic value. The highly rugged landscape of the Acherontas Canyon, is tied to the ancient Greek mythology as the Oracle of the Dead or “Nekromanteio” lies just footsteps from the banks of the Acheron River. The whole area has been declared by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage.
The Kalama River Delta formed by the outfalls of the old and new river bed with its shallow lagoons and marshes is one of the most important wetlands of western Greece and Europe as due to its geographical position is an integral part of western migration route of birds.
The marsh of Kalodiki is also a wetland of great ecological value and great aesthetics due to its importance for the birds’ western migratory route and its natural features (freshwater marsh, waterlilies etc.). At the time of flowering of the European White Waterlily (Nymphaea alba ) the view of the marsh is unique.
In the Acherontas area the Necromantio, the ruins of Middle Byzantine Basilica church in Gliki village, the Souli wells in Kougi and the Castle of Kiafas are some of the places worth visiting. A steep path connects the fertile valley of Acherontas with the historic village of Souli, a trail that offers great views of the Straits of Acheron, passes through old arched bridges, the famous Stairways of Tzavelena and ruins of old mills, ending at the old castle Kiafas which was the main stronghold of Souli. Those who want to experience the adventure can take the trail to the sources of Acheron, walking or horse riding through the river with clear cold water.
In the Kalama River either by car, cycling, riding or hiking the visitor can enjoy panoramic area views; observe in the estuary birds of prey like buzzards, eagles, falcons and aquatic birds; visit historical monuments such as the archaeological sites of the Tower Ragio and Mastilitsa and the Stairway (Scala) of Sagiadas and swim in the beach of Loutsa.
Hiking, birdwatching, riding on springs, canoeing, boating in the estuary and riparian vegetation for birding, insects and many other herpetofauna species such as terrapins, water shakes and frogs.
- Unique historic and mythological heritage which includes the Acherontas straits with the “Gates of Hadis”, the village of Souli and the Nekromandio.
- Exceptional fauna and flora with many rare species (birds, reptiles, amphibians, plants etc.)
- Distinct view of flowering European White Waterlilies in the marsh of Kalodiki
- Fantastic clean beaches for swim and snorkeling
